Who Am I?
Take a quick look at my Github or LinkedIn for specifics but a quick summary is:
I've been a professional web developer for over a decade working on everything from autonomous vehicles to video editors to IOT services
I got my bachelor's in Computer Science at Northeastern University
Outside of work I enjoy writing Haskell and making small games
I get a kick out of teaching people the stuff I think is neat and have worked individually with interns, junior developers, and students on a professional and volunteer basis throughout my career
I live in the Lincoln Square neighborhood of Chicago with my wife and two cats
How Do I Approach Teaching?
I've spent a lot of time thinking about how to get the things in my brain into other people's brains and I've come to the following conclusions:
-
Anyone can learn math and computer science. Many people believe that they aren't "good at math", are too "right-brained", etc. This is nonsense. We all have the capability not just to get good grades in these subjects, but really understand and appreciate them. It's my goal to prove this to you.
-
We learn best when we are slightly outside our comfort zone. When we are presented with challenges that are too easy we become bored and when we face challenges that are too difficult we become overwhelmed. This presents an enormous challenge for classroom settings where there are dozens of students progressing at different rates, however in private lessons I'm able to tailor material to exactly meet your needs, keeping you engaged and progressing.

Learning is a partnership between teacher and student. A common misconception is that the information between a student and teacher only goes one way. However, every student has perspectives and outside knowledge unique to themselves. Everytime I teach something I view it as an opportunity to enrich my own understanding and explore aspects of topics I myself had never considered.
